As a dog returneth to his own vomit, the media returns to the Larry Craig scandal -- and okay, yeah, I'm right there with them. The Idaho Statesman newspaper reported today that eight -- count 'em, eight -- men have come forward claiming that they've either had sex with Larry Craig or were the object of his advances. The on-again off-again Senator denies all of this, of course, accusing the newspaper of "tabloid journalism." Well, of course it's tabloid journalism; the Larry Craig scandal is a tabloid-level scandal, helped along by Larry Craig himself. Seriously, this would all go away in a heartbeat if the man took himself out of the public eye, which he almost did a few months back. But thanks to the fact that Craig seems to be in love with the spotlight, or something, "I am not gay" will take its rightful place alongside "I am not a crook" and "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" in the Lame Politician's Denial Hall of Fame.
Oh, but the Larry Craig scandal gets better, oh yes, it does, because, like chocolate running into peanut butter, the Larry Craig scandal has run smack-dab into the Ted Haggard scandal. That's right, one of the eight men mentioned above is none other than Mike Jones, Ted Haggard's methed-out "escort". Not that it's necessarily believable -- what are the odds? -- but it's certainly amusing, and it wouldn't even have seen the light of day had Craig taken himself out of public circulation when he had the chance.
Thanks in no small part to the man himself, the Larry Craig scandal has legs. Legs with a wide stance.
