Choosing science over religion    Back to the homepage
Views: 1709 Report
I think that if a person is capable of accepting both their religious beliefs and what the scientific community has deemed true (or at least uncontested), that's great. Most people can't truly do that though, and so I am very happy that two of my friends who were raised in religious households believing in God (one of their fathers is a minister) are now agnostics leaning far more toward science. It's a direct result of what we've learned in school (my friend cited our biology class as a main reason he isn't really religious any more), so at least those bass ackwards schools who are teaching intelligent design have an opposite number, eh?

occaeco (7/15): I consider myself an Agnostic Humanist. I came to much of the same conclusions as these people did, but wasn't raised religous. Instead, I went to Catechism classes at age 15 and learned about Christianity. It didn't make sense compared to what I had learned from biology and it seemed to contradict and defy simple logic, and proven science. After learning both sides of the picture it was a no brainer, but I still couldn't dismiss God, because I don't have an explanation for why the elements on this earth composing its ecosystem are here... missy (8/21): I have no problem with science at all. I believe in God and science has proved many things in scriptures that God told us in His word from the beginning. Many many things proven in both the medical and scientific world have been facts in the written word of God. They could have saved much time and effort if they had looked there for answers instead of spending billions only to come out with the same truths of Gods word, they were there all the while. I would be happy to elaborate on some of them if anyone is truly interested. I am not here to argue, but to share. (report)
vamosburito59 (8/21): If they did that though, accepting the word of God on faith, then they wouldn't be scientists. And as there are also contradictions between the two points of view, that wouldn't work out. (report)
Anonymous (11/1): I agree, people should move away from religion and take hold of facts. It is time to update our knowledge from that of 2000 years ago. (report)
Anonymous (3/5): I'm with you too. We don't need any more religion. All it seems to do is fuel hatred and division in the world. And even moderates, who try to take both science and religion and intertwine the two, are just betraying both science and religion and picking neither side. (report)
Anonymous (11/21): It wasn't until I took a biology course in college that I began to question things that can not be proven, ie, a God, or any God. (report)
