Cell Phone Rip-Off    Back to the homepage
Views: 3045 Report
Why should we pay a monthly fee for a particular number of minutes used? It is so difficult to determine how many minutes you're going to use each month. And if you go over your minutes, the charge is outrageous. Why can't the cell phone companies charge the same as we pay for land lines...a monthly service fee for unlimited calls? I think we're being ripped off!

Scuba (9/21): The infrastructure to support cell calls is much more expensive than traditional land line calls. No one is requiring you to have a cell phone. The economics are appearantly working as the number of cell phone users is at an all time high and land line usage continues to drop. (report)
schoonerman (7/7): With all due respect, Scuba is mistaken. Infrastructure for wireless is far less costly then wired, that was and is the primary incentive for the transition between wired and wireless. Can you imagine how much money providers save by not having to send a full crew and a truck out to activate a new customer and that is just one of the many areas that present a gain for providers. As with most new technologies they tend to be more expensive during an early adoption period and decrease with time. The cell phone industry has been around along time and does not follow this solely due to a lack of competition (monopolies), price fixing and contractual constraints. Can you imagine what would happen if Microsoft tried to follow the same model? (report)

Anonymous (9/22): Several companies, including Tracfone and Virgin, don't charge monthly fees, but sell cards good for a certain number of minutes. I've bveen using a Tracfone for 3 years. (report)
Anonymous (6/8): the new american way is to allow corporations and government to stick it up our ass while we just complain and allow it to keep happening. it sucks, and it's wrong, but what will it take to do more than post a complain on a random and useless internet forum? legislation needs to be put in place to protect consumers from being rhino-raped. (report)
pquick6165 (9/13): its like the gas companies they screw us because they can (report)
Anonymous (2/6): I agree. And also in other countries cell phone rates are allot cheaper and they get similar service. In the US you can pay >40$ for service. In Germany thats the high end. (report)
Anonymous (2/20): if you don t like it don t have a cell phone and sleep peacefully without worries about monthly fee (report)
Anonymous (9/17): Unfortunately many of us are victims of supply and demand. Too many idiots paying exorbitant fees without question. As long as cell phone companies can rip people off, they will. Unfortunately the lemmings wouldn't dare not use their phones for a day or two. Imagine how fast prices would drop if people enmasse closed their accounts? (report)
SICOFIT (4/22): THIS IS A RIP OFF AND NOT 0NLY THAT IF I DIAL SOMEONES CELL PHONE THEY ALSO GET CHARGED FOR THEIR AIRTIME ANOTHER RIP OFF AND PAY AS YOU GO IF I BUY A $25.00 CARD AND DON'T USE IT ALL IN THE 30 DAYS I LOOSE THE BALANCE ANOTHER RIP OFF (report)
frenzyfire (6/18): Well first off let me say to pquick that the gas companies make only a fraction of a cent on a gallon of gasoline, and their profit margin is only 8.5%, compared to lets say...brewers who average 10.5%, supply and demand is supply and demand, the politicians who prevent us from drilling for more oil, and building more refineries, plus the environmentalist whack jobs are the ones to blame, but anyway, oh yea, cell phones, if you dont want a freakin cell phone dont buy one, just like everyone else is saying, sure their a freakin rip off, but you really cant do much about it, business is business, they have to eat too, plus why should they not be rewarded for building an innovative and now almost vital business? Its always easy to get angry at successful people. Working and paying taxes are the best cure for a liberal. (report)
gerrycda (8/22): Cell phones are cheaper to run than line lines. No thousands of miles of wiring. Towers pay for themselves within days. Yet on a landline, you can call India for pennies per minute, or for $7/month over and above basic landline rates, you can call Cda from the US for 7 cents a minute. Roaming charges are a huge massive rip-off...nothing more than a do-nothing fee. I don't haven't owned a cell phone in 10 years 'cause they're such a rip. (report)
AnonyMouse (9/5): Text messaging is another sever rip off. Sending text data are pretty trivial in comparison to streaming audio yet can cost 10 cents a pop (report)
Anonymous (12/3): Yeah the gas companies only make a few cents my @$$, this gets especially hard to believe when the gas stations are claiming to be only making a few cents a gallon. See how gas station owners and how oil company CEOs live makes you look like an idiot. (report)
mave (4/28): I agree that cell phone companies have been ripping people off with their charges. People pay so much for monthly minutes and texting. It is ridiculous. If more people fought against being cheated instead of being dumb and saying 'Okay, take all my money for the pretty, shiny phone' we wouldn't have to pay so much. And what about the early termination fees? I can get car insurance and cancel any time I want and get my money back, but I can't do that with a cell phone. Also, I can return a product and get my money back, but if the cell phone sales person tells me I will have great reception in my area and I find out that I don't, I can't return the phone and end my plan and get my money back. Wake up people, we are being cheated and the masses are dumb enough to be dazzled by the flashing lights and do nothing. (report)
Mi0dr4g (5/25): You would think getting a prepaid plan would be cost effective and give you freedom from contracts but in reality it's a huge rip off. You pay x($) and have a 30 day limit on the minutes..wtf?? They have you by the balls with that crap man. All greed I tell you... (report)
tcocoa (7/14): so true..dumped my cellphone company and told them to go to hell! i have a house phone and that's fine with me. (report)
Gaga (8/7): It is true that American providers charge too much and the whole thing with iPhone etc is a rip off. Look at European systems. You would pay much less there. (report)
Anonymous (10/19): This whole situation pisses me off so much. (report)
randombiz (12/2): We are getting ripped off big time. The cell phone companies know this and they know exactly how much they can continue to charge and for how long. They are biding their time and squeezing as much out of us as possible until consumer protection agencies step in and solve this for us. There's not much you can do except write your congressman. Cell phone companies are also desperate telling us they have things that others don't as if we care. I don't care that company x has a phone that company y doesn't as they all have equivalent phones yet they brag about it like it makes their company special. T-Mobile for instance RENAMES phones created by other companies to act as if it's a phone they created! It's asinine! Unfortunately this is capitalism at work and these companies are going to continue to nickle and dime us until they are told to stop. They are doing this now because nobody is making them do otherwise! It's outright greed and it's typical American business! (report)
Sprintsucks (1/11): Today on Monday, January 11, 2010 I received a letter delivered by U.S. Mail Postal Service from Sprint stating that on January 10, 2010 that Sprint would now be changing the terms of my account and if I did not enroll in automatic payments by January 10, 2010 I would be getting charged another $4.99 per month on top of my bill because I had not signed up for automatic bill payments. The letter is dated December 21, 2009. I find this hard to believe that Sprint sent this letter out on December 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th or even as late as January 7, 2010. Most mail will reach my home within 3 to 7 days, even if it comes from the East coast. Supervisor Chazz stated that he could cancel my service agreement without any early termination fee and that I could port the phone number to another carrier. I stated that I wanted my money back I paid for the cell phone, accessories and software I had bought for the phone as the phone is not transferable to another cell phone carrier. Supervisor Chazz stated that he could not refund the money for the phone, accessories, and software. Supervisor Chazz then asked if I wanted the phone turn off right now. I told him to not touch anything or disconnect the service until I contacted the news and an attorney about this matter. So, this is where I am at. My contract is being breached and I believe that this may be a case of mail fraud as well. (report)
