Does anyone else think that Brita filters are just a hoax? How do we know if they are really doing anything to the water we are drinking. I have noticed that if I fill a water bottle with the filtered Brita water, and then drink it a few hours later, it tastes horrible! I am thinking bottled water, though expensive and a hassle, is the way to go.

I'm a huge fan of the Brita and know several folks over at Clorox that work on that brand and have heard a lot of the facts. Try drinking that water out of a glass and NOT some old gamey/smelly plastic water bottle (it's also better on the environment). Plastic is pourous and will collect bacteria and other organisims that can make the water taste funky. Try smelling the plastic bottle when it's empty, you'll know right away. As for Bones' reply, 100% correct about the flouride, particularly with kids. Over 20, it's not a big issue because our teeth are pretty much fully developed.

Thank God I live in a place where we can actually drink water from the tap. The last thing I want to worry about is Brita or Bottled.

When you say bottled? do you mean bottled "spring" water or plain old water thats been pumped through 1000's of feet of piping at the plant? Little known fact, the largest bottled water company in Northern CA also has the largest water bill of any other company, including the Budweiser plant.Makes you wonder if the water you get in those big plastic bottles didnt come out of a hose at the bottling plant. Get a water test kit & test your home water against water you "pay" for. You might be surprised that your home water is purer.

bottled water is basically filtered water thats been distilled. Brita pitchers used activated carbon beads coated in silver to filter impurities from the water. Your right it does go "flat" after a few hours though so it will taste a little like salt water. But where I live the tap water tastes like metal and dirt (even though the pipes are new)... so I notice a huge difference with my brita pitcher. Plus the directions state that your supposed to keep contact between the water and the filter end at all times. Ive also kept water in my pitcher for a week in the fridge while on vacation and came back and drank some of the water and it was fine.

Bottle water isn't necessarily better than tap water infact, stricter rules are imposed on tap water and it gets check more frequently for carcinogens or any other bateria. Often times, bottle water is tap water. As for brita filters, they may help with some aspects, but not necessarily with all. Thus tap water and the use of a britta is safer than bottle water.

if you had a glass of brita water, and then the bottle of brita water, and compared the taste, maybe it would make more sense.

I use Brita since quite a while in London, UK, where the water is quite hard (ie has lots of chalk) and, straight from the tap, actually has a bit of a taste of itself. After filtering with Brita, is tastes just perfectly neutral.
HOWEVER, recently my Brita caraffe started to develop a bit of a smell itself, and the water has a strange taste too. Tried to clean it, and replace the filter too, but this had only short term effect. After a few days taste/smell would be back. Anyone had similar experiences, and any solution to this problem. As if it persists, my Brita caraffe won't be of much use to me anymore.

If you think that Fluoride in our water is a GOOD thing, you may want to look at these FACTS ABOUT FLUORIDE:
- Fluoride is a waste by-product of the fertilizer and aluminum industry and it's also a Part II Poison under the UK Poisons Act 1972.
- Fluoride is one of the basic ingredients in both PROZAC (FLUoxetene Hydrochloride) and Sarin nerve gas (Isopropyl-Methyl-Phosphoryl FLUoride).
- USAF Major George R. Jordan testified before Un-American Activity committees of Congress in the 1950's that in his post as U.S.-Soviet liaison officer, the Soviets openly admitted to "Using the fluoride in the water supplies in their concentration camps, to make the prisoners stupid, docile, and subservient."
- The first occurrence of fluoridated drinking water on Earth was found in Germany's Nazi prison camps. The Gestapo had little concern about fluoride's supposed effect on children's teeth; their alleged reason for mass-medicating water with sodium fluoride was to sterilize humans and force the people in their concentration camps into calm submission. (Ref. book: "The Crime and Punishment of I.G. Farben" by Joseph Borkin.)
- 97% of western Europe has rejected fluoridated water due to the known health risks, however 10% of Britons drink it and the UK government is trying to fast track the fluoridation of the entire country's water supply.
- In Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg fluoridation of water was rejected because it was classified as compulsive medication against the subject's will and therefore violated fundamental human rights.
- In November of 2006, the American Dental Association (ADA) advised that parents should avoid giving babies fluoridated water.
- Sources of fluoride include: fluoride dental products, fluoride pesticides, fluoridated pharmaceuticals, processed foods made with fluoridated water, and tea.

I assure you that within 5 years, water in plastic bottles will become illegal. New research is about to be released showing that water takes on mollecular structure of the plastic it's bottled in (even if it's kept cold) and is completely destructive to the body. Similarly, mineral water from springs is very taxing on the liver. Tap water passed through a Brtia (which is no hoax) or any reverse osmosis system, is the best possible source of water available.

I bought Brita system on advice from a friend who swore by it...then a few weeks later another friend claimed Brita actually puts fake sugar in the filters to make the water taste better...now I'm worried/confused on WHAT to believe! After reading some others' posts on here I see mixed reactions/comments/claims of expertise on Brita, plastic, flouride, etc. It's so hard to know which people really know what they're talking about and which ones are just blowing their own horn to get their personal opinion heard. For me, I do notice a STRONG metallic/chlorinated-type smell on the lid of the pitcher after filtering and water sits for awhile. The water isn't the most fantastic tasting I've ever had like some of the RO waters I've tried, but does beat the horrible swimming-pool-twang of our local tap! Wish their was a trustworthy, fully accurate, MAGIC GENIE who could just answer the questions for me!!! I feel like the level of ridiculousness it takes to believe a genie exists is equal to the level of ridiculousness it takes to believe their are really dependable answers to questions of health, environment, ethic and so on....that would include the realm of Brita and Nazi Germany or course :)

I heard bottled water is dead water and I also read the following:
"Ophaug says bottled water often does not have fluoride added to it. Or, if it has been purified through reverse osmosis or distillation, the fluoride may have been removed. People who drink mostly bottled water, especially those who have children, need to be aware of this, he says. They may need to use supplemental fluoride that is available by prescription from dentists or doctors. The supplements are usually recommended for children ages 7 to 16. Fluoride supplements cost around $15 for a three-month supply."

By the way, where I live, there is plenty of tap water that does NOT have flouride either. Your dentist will know. But back to the post, I like bottled water because I can take them with me.

You can take tap water and boil it on the stove, then cool and put it in a glass bottle like you would lemonade. Put it in the refridgerator and keep cold...it will really taste good. try it just once - you will like it.

When i was a student at manchester uni, me an fellow students we curious if britas actually removed all of the cancer causing chlorine.
we took a water sample, and checked for chlorine.
To keep a story short, we found we had to filter water through the brita maxi filter 83 times before significant chlorine was removed.
the first time we did it only made a diffrence to the smell, and didnt actually remove much chlorine.
after the experiment i stopped using brita filter.

fluoride supplements are a scam! You only need a small amount of fluoride for healthy teeth and those tablets have like 1000mg! WAY MORE THEN YOU EVER NEED!
You don't need fluoride PERIOD! Unless your body lacks the ability to send minerals and nutrients to your teeth, there is NO NEED FOR FLUORIDE, EVER!
People who drink only Distilled water have bad teeth, because it has no minerals that you body needs and so your body takes it from your organs and teeth instead. FYI
