Hey, it doesn't have to be an award winner, but if you're looking for something inexpensive that tastes good, it works. Mumms has that cheap, biting after taste.

If you go to the liquor store, it's about $5.99 or $6.99 a bottle. This is the Ballatore Spumante...not the Red one. Just the normal one.

I hadn't come across Ballatore before, so I did a little research. First Ballatore is not a true Champagne, but a sparkling wine, Varietal Origin: 100% California. To me the word Champagne (France's real deal) says quality, and it must be a real special occasion to buy Champagne, for all those other occasions I stick with the sparkling wines. The Epinions for Ballatore were mixed, but the one that stood out was by ifthe, Jul 22 '03: The soda pop of sparkling wines, Pros: Excellent for Mimosas and champagne cocktails, inexpensive. Cons: Not so great for anything else. So I dug a little deeper. The residual sugars are 7.6 and the alcohol level is 8.2%. This must be one sweet sparkling wine! In comparison a Domain Chandon Brut Classic (California) is rated a (90), and is described as: Balance and elegance, with nutty flavors and hints of brioche; flavors of buttered wheat toast and apples; solid wine and good value. Ive found it for around $15, which is 50% more, but then again $10 for soda pop is pricy.

CSTRAW: That's because it is cheap and bitter...and what you call after taste oeniphiles call the "finish". You ever see Meet the Parents? "Do you have any nice bottles of champagne?...No...Well what could I get for $100?...You could get a lot of Mumms"

To Anonymous: Champagne refers only to those sparkling wines from that particular region of France. Though I suppose all tissues are now Kleenex, aren't they?
