The new iPhone announced by apple and which costs $499 will be a an absolute game chaning phone in the industry. The new iphone is simply one largetouch screen. It has a 2 megapixel camera, full internet access, ipod functionality, widescreen for movies, full keyboard, and an awesome computer interface for navigating all these features. Its all about the software but somehow they packed it all into a device smaller than a blackberry or treo. Nice job apple. iPhone comes out in June on the cingular network.

From the description in appears to be a game changing device, and the public markets seem to agree. As of the time of this writing, Apple stock is up over 7% for the day. Competitor Research in Motion (Blackberry) is down over 6%, wiping $2 billion dollars in market cap off the table. Palm, maker of the Treo, is also down, nearly 6%.

Looking forward to it's release. I was fearing it'd cost a lot more - let's hope you're right.

iPhone is awesome! I never jump on new phones. I think its ridiculous to pay the opening price, wait a year, save $200. Unless you are a jetsetting multimillionaire, do we really need all the extras on a phone? But now, this one speaks to an average person and brilliantly combines a phone, a camera and mp3 player with many extras. I'll be buying this one on release!

While I hold huge regard for Steve Jobs and what he has done with Apple since his return the iphone will be a moderate seller.
When all the hype and expert marketing is over with the iphone is out gunned at almost every turn by Palm's Treo 700 to say nothing of the new Treo 750 (both of which are at least $100 less in cost).
While the retail/personal "do-it-all" device venue is heating up, the iphone is just the latest newcomer to the mix behind RIMM's Pearl, Moto's Q, and so on...
A good product? most likely - but not at all a game changer. Just for giggles match it up to the company with the most superior product and the most under rated stock price on the planet - PALM! Just because the hype is great doesn't mean the product is superior.

About the only thing the iphone has over the Palm is the ease of use. It's more "artsy" looking and less "techy" looking. With that being said I wonder how long Apple will continue to dump their huge marketing bounty at a product that will be just another phone in the eyes of the consumer?
Palm is now available on the blackberry connect global network and Rimm is now being picked up by phone carriers like Cingular. I wonder how Apple will compete and what they have up their sleeve?
As far as the stock reaction is concerned this happens often when any new product comes out. I remember when the Motorola "Q" came out, both Palm and Rimm dropped then too and it turned out to be another so/so seller.
