Wow, how predictable was this? A very unpopular Prez is now worried about his legacy of a total fiasco in Iraq in the last year and wants to solve the Middle East Peace Crisis, but Annapolis won't bring Peace. It's a laudable goal, of course, and we should be helping, but mostly by getting out of the way. Why weren't they worried about this, like 7 years ago, when they could have picked up where Clinton had to leave off? Bush will crow for months toward his failed presidency that they set up this Annapolis thing.
Only, it's not going to work, really. If all the previous let downs have shown anything, it's that things have to change at a fundamental level for Peace to happen. The US has to stop meddling in the affairs of Israel and Palestine and just let them sort it out for themselves, even if there is tremendous violence. We're not the greatest power any more, and even if we were, we need to get out of everyone's backyard and tend to our own messes. I think it's clear that Annapolis won't bring Peace to the Middle East until the Middle East brings Peace to itself.
